SSD with OS and new HD as main storage

Hey guys,

When I was searching around on the forum here I couldn't quite find the answer I was looking for.

I'm not a tech guy by any means so I had purchased my PC from Digital Storm instead of building it. I had opted for a 128gb SSD without any other storage simply because I couldn't afford it at the time. I've recently purchased a WD Velociraptor WD1000DHTZ and installed it. I'm wanting this to be the main storage for my system. Leaving only the SSD to have my OS.

My main problem is that my SSD is completely full and I'm wanting to move pretty much every single thing to my new WD drive. Keeping only my OS and maybe 1 game. However, getting things to save automatically has proven quite difficult. Getting things setup on the new drive the way that they are on the SSD isn't working as I'd hoped.

I was a bit naive to think that everything could be dragged over, then deleted from my SSD, and then everything would download and install on my WD thereafter.

I'd like to only keep my OS on my SSD and have everything else be on my new WD drive. Is that possible? If so, if I download programs will they install on my new drive? The main question of course is... how do I do it?

Thanks in advance.

What OS are you using? If you are using a 64 bit version of Windows you can create Program Files and Program Files (x86) on WD drive. When installing programs you should be able to select where they are installed. For example change the drive letter from C:\Program Files\new program to D:\Program Files\new program. The only thing you would change would be the drive letter. With some programs you might need to do the Advanced install instead of the Quick install. Here are a couple of links that explain how to move folders such as My Document, My Pictures, etc. to another drive:

Any existing programs on the SSD that you want to move to the WD drive should be reinstalled to the WD drive. A simple move won't work. Remember that you need to keep at least 10-20% of the space on the SSD free for optimal performance (with 20% being best). Keeping anything less will shorten the life of the SSD.

I really appreciate you taking the time to help me out. I'm using Windows 7 and some downloads don't have an advanced setup. They just automatically download and run from the temp folder. Skype for instance. Can the temp folder be changed to the WD? Or is that asking too much?

Thanks again.
