Frozen windows 8 after sleep mode

I just got a ultrabook with windows8 and so far am close to hating it. However, my immediate problem is that after sleep mode, when I wanted to shut it down, it froze completely and their stupid "charms" do not appear. I tried a few suggestions posted online - nothing worked. Any ideas? Please help!

Johnny, thanks - that thing has a mind on it's own! Yes, I've done updates in great numbers. I've always had somebody else to deal with hardware, software,etc - decided to brave it alone this time. Maybe not a good idea for somebody with no computer background. Please bear with me, how do I download classic shell?
I let the batteries die last night and just turned it on. It told me I was horrible person for not shutting it properly, however it came back to life. I'm such a noob!

The problem seems to have something to do with my refusal to use their backup app, which is free to a point, but keeps demanding upgrades. This is not the backup I want to use. Everything was working until I tried to shut it down, instead of doing that, the backup remainder showed up and everyting is frozen again. I have the desktop on screan, but none of the icons respond.
