Hey guys, I appreciate you reading my thread. I have some knowledge about computers; But there are a few of you out there that have much more than me, so that is why I'm seeking some answers. I just recently found the Tom's Hardware Forums, and feeling excited to hopefully become apart of this community. I'll start off by explaining my situation as best I can.

Some have ridiculed me for planning a higher end build for my first ever build. I understand starting smaller is a better idea for learning and experience purposes, and also to minimize risk of damaging expensive hardware, But I am fairly intuitive and have been spending spare time extensively researching this topic. I plan to take necessary precations such as using a test bench to check hardware bought via online for defects possibly caused by shipping or other factors, and taking my time with the custom water cooling loop I'm planning to install.

Even know I plan to use this build only for some gaming and possibly video editing, I want to build an absolute BEAST. I have been working 50-60 hours a week for awhile now, and have saved up about 13,000$; and my tax return coming soon So I feel like it's time to buy myself something nice. I do like to budget somewhat and I don't plan on going too over-the-top. But all considering that money isn't much of an issue.I need your guys' help picking out some Components for my PC. I have picked out a couple things to get you guys started but feel free to give me a better option.

GPU: GTX 780 ~ Not sure which manufacturer yet, probably one that is compatible with Swiftech waterblocks.

CPU: Hoping to get some suggestions so I don't bottleneck my GPU. Was thinking an i7 of some sort. Keep in mind the custom water loop I plan to install when choosing parts.

Case: Have no clue where to start with a case. Something with good airflow obviously a full tower. looks do not matter to me, I am not building this computer at all for aesthetics. Just power.

Motherboard: Definitely need help choosing a motherboard. Like I said I plan on using this build primarily for gaming. I have no idea where to start on this one I'm a MOBO noob

RAM: Undecided - open for suggestions

PSU: Undecided

There is honestly no point in spending anything above about $3K excluding screens, and even that is massively overkill.

Remember that components go out of date very quickly - there's little point in sinking lots of money into it.

CPU: Likely either an i5-4670K. If you want to do lots of video editing, an FX-8350 or i7-4770K are options. If you want to throw cash around, maybe an i7-3930K. You won't bottleneck with any of those though.

GPU: If you want to throw $$$ around, a pair or trio of 780s is as much as you would ever want to go for. Anything more than one is still stupid, though.

I kind of like the look of Bitfenix's Shinobi XL - has lots of room for rads etc. Plenty of other options though.

MB depends really on what socket you choose and how many GPUs you want.

You might as well go for 16GB. 2x8GB if you pick LGA115x or AM3+, 4x4GB (for quad channel) if you get LGA2011. There's little advantage above DDR3-1600, though -1866 is coming down in price.

PSU depends on everything else. Pick it last, though about 1kW is necessary if you go for tri-SLI, more if on a 3930k.

You're way overkill though, and I hope you have something like a trio of QHD screens lined up for it.

Like I said I don't plan on going too overkill. 3k or less is fine,i also understand parts go outdated quickly but if i spend money on these parts i know i wont have tp upgrade for multiple years or atleast i shouldnt have to.

I actually don't plan on going SLI right now. After doing some research I feel like single GPU 780 is what I'm looking for, SLI seems pointless with a card like that especially considering my monitor setup like you said, I don't plan on doing crossfire or whatever you call it. 2 monitors will be hooked up with this build, one for gaming, and the other for web browsing/streaming while im gaming. but yeah definately not doing nividea surround or w/e. and I heard SLI can fuck shit up with certain games and it doesn't actually increase framerate in most cases.

OK. Cut that down to maybe $1500 plus screens and cooling loop.

I'd suggest building the actual PC, then getting the cooling loop and adding it in. Pulling the cooler off the GPU, then having to put it back on for an RMA, would be irritating.

Future proofing isn't a good idea, but a 780 isn't that overkill.

CrossFire is the AMD version of nVidia's SLI. Both have mild scaling problems, but CF is worse.

I don't see why future proofing isn't a good idea. And you said I'm going way overkill, but then you say cut down to 1500$ followed by saying that the 780 is t overkill which is like 600$. I'm confused mayne. I wish people would stop limiting me on my own budget and telling me what I do or don't need for a build because its "overkill" and justs help me pick some parts
