No need to get a haswell cpu unless you have to get the latest tech. You could run a sandybridge and you'd still be fine. Look for the 2500k or the 3570k.

As for the Graphics card, if you live near scan, go pick up a 670 for £180, cracking deal. I could never compare ATI cards to Nvidia ones though so i don't know how good the 7870 is.

i think you should go with the 2nd build. also if you want higher boot time's you should squeeze in a 120GB SSD. and like phil_livesey say's get the GTX 670 if your near scan. as you'd get GTX 7970 level performance for the price of a 7870XT. the performance differance shouldn't be really big but you should get 8-10 more FPS in average than 7870

EDIT: no the performance difference would be too small too even notice.
