What is the correct Real Tech driver for the Dell Precision 670? It only says AC97 Sound Blaster Emulation in the manual. I have tried downloading and using the WDM_A406 driver from Real Tech and it loads half way, then I get the blue screen. I found the file it needed is also a Windows file ALCXWDM.SYS so I I direct it to that and it loads till the very end and then blue screens me again when it gets to a final exe. file. It has all the original components in this system and arrived with out OS or disks. The first time I set it up with XP 32 bit , the sound worked no problems, then I tried to redo it with the XP pro 64 bit OS (it is a 64 bit system) and lost sound and wifi ability that I had. So I went back to the 32 bit version again and still no sound or wifi ... can someone help me please?

It did happen to me once to get a broken link or the wrong file when downloading a driver. I requested "chat" tech support on the Dell website. A few minutes later, I was chatting with a tech and he recognized it was the wrong file that they've put there, and after some research he provided me a direct link to download the proper driver from a Dell server somewhere.

Also note that Windows XP is an old OS and that Microsoft will drop support for it on April 1st 2014 which is coming fast. So after this date, no more security updates and patches. If you use this system to browse the web you could be at risk. Unfortunately I didn't see drivers for other OS for this system on the Dell website, but maybe it doesn't matter. If you install a...

Don't use the CD that came with the system to install your drivers, they're probably outdated already. Always download latest drivers from your manufacturer's website.

There you go, all drivers for Precision 670 for XP 32-bit:

http://www.dell.com/support/troubleshooting/us/en/04/Product/precision-670

If you look under "Audio", there 2 different types of Sound Blaster cards there and 1 onboard audio card too. Check inside the computer case or in your BIOS to see which one you have.

I don't have the original install disks. I did download this driver but it will not unpack and install because it says on one, that is part of a pack and I need to insert the last disk of the set...don't have one, the Wifi driver is the same and so is the video. So they must have been part of the original disks that came with this system. the other sound card driver listed is a dead link. Atleast it has been everytime I have tried it. I finally got the video by going to the NVidia site and getting the driver there...works great. The wifi I can't get it to do any connections. I have to use a USB wireless as the slot for a card inside is crowded out by the big video card fan. The current audio drivers I got direct from Real Tech and just downloaded it yet again.

That's strange, I must have downloaded thousands of drivers from the Dell website and they usually always work. We have hundreds of Dell machines at work including many Precision workstations. Maybe it's just a broken link or Dell put the wrong file there. Your only option is to contact Dell, only them can provide the right drivers for your system.

If you install a more modern OS like Windows 7 or Windows 8 it will probably have all the proper drivers built-in and pre-installed since it's old hardware. So installing a newer OS might solve all your issues.
