How does AMD's CPU socket locking mechanism work?

On Intel boards, you lift the lever and the CPU cover, set the CPU in the socket, put the cover down and lock the lever into place. On AMD boards you set the CPU in the socket and put the lever down. How does this lock it into place? Thanks in advanced.

So is it the friction between the pin board and the pins that hold the CPU in place?
