so i'm trying to do a little research for my girlfriend. she's a photographer and uses a nikon d800 so her files are huge. the computer she's been doing her editing on is starting to really crawl and i think it's time for her to get a real computer.

i was looking at this guy for her: http://www.amazon.com/Dell-XPS-8700-X8700-7500BLK-Desktop/dp/B00CUAVXAY

the only thing that's got me a little weary is simply the brand name. but honestly i've had dells in the past that were great, and spec wise the thing seems to me like it's a beast. i compose music and although i got my computer 3 years ago, this thing is better, spec-wise, than what i'm using. the only thing i can't tell is what the power supply is like on this thing, but processor, ram, ram expandability, and the ssd and hdd all look great.

any opinions/thoughts would be much appreciated. i was also looking at some asus pcs... i'm looking at dell/asus/etc because if she's gonna do this she wants to go for it soon, and with amazon prime, she could have this thing in 2 days. and the price is right. we're not super bargain hunting, but it's not name-brand over-expensive either.

thanks!

Solution
If the machine follows ATX specifications you can change the PSU to whatever you want without issue. You will definitely need a new PSU if you ever want to add in a decent graphics card.
Power supplies in prebuilts, you can just assume their pretty low quality. From the prescence of that red switch on the back, it doesn't have Active PFC which is a pretty standard feature in even budget PSU's, so wouldn't expect anything what enthusiasts would even call adequate.
However it will work with the machine as-is, and if it does fail you have Dell to replace it.

Looks like a decent machine for her purposes, like all pre-builts its a bit odd in some choices (like 24GB of RAM) and could be had cheaper and higher quality if you custom built it, but its not too bad.

thanks for the response. yea the 24gb ram is an odd choice, but it is expandable unlike some pre-builts and like i said everything else looks pretty great.

one quick question, as far as you can tell, do you think I'd be able to replace the PSU if she ever needed to? i can't imagine her upgrading this thing for years. it will sit there as is, with an external harddrive hooked up and that's about it. the only things i could imagine her ever adding would be a better video card and possibly a 3rd internal harddrive (probably a 2nd ssd).

thank you for your help. yea she went ahead and ordered it this morning. i'm sure it's gonna be more than she needs coming from a computer that cost $500 4 years ago to a computer that costs $1700 today... haha.
