Did you install to a completely blank disk? Windows 8 prefers to be installed to Unallocated space, ie. delete all partitions at the 'Where do you want to install Windows' Screen, Drive Options (Advanced)
Its not just Windows 8, all versions pefer a clean disk. And its always a good idea to do it as well.
Seems W8 won't create the System Reserved (350 Mb) partition if the drive has any pre-existing partitions, not sure if that applies to earlier versions, but agree totally that it's always a good idea...
Vista did not require a reserve, Windows 7 did a 100MB partition, and Windows 8 does 350. All it puts there is a basic troubleshooter, your boot file, and a few critical startup troubleshooting files. It only matters when you have a problem booting, its where the troubleshooter looks for info.
