I am building my first PC soon.
I have a budget of $800 australian dollars (not including monitor and os)
Here is my parts list so far:

CPU: Intel core i3 3225 ($155)
RAM: G.Skill Ares 1866Mhz 8gb (2x4) ($89)
GPU: Galaxy Geforce GTX 650 2gb GC ($145)
PSU: Corsair CX-600 Modular 80+ bronze ($109)
OPTICAL: Lite-On 24x DVDRW ($25)
MOBO: ASRock B75 Pro3M ($72)
HDD: WesternDigital Black 500gb ($82)
CASE: Coolermaster K280 ($49)
Other: Logitech MK270 mouse/keyboard combo ($35)

Plus I am allowing myself $150 for a 23"+ monitor and $150 for an OS...
Will this build be compatible and decent for my price range?

get a 500w PSU, your system load wont even touch 400w but possible 300w.
try to get a "GTx 650 TI Boost" if you cant get that...

try to get a "GTx 650 TI Boost" if you cant get that then get the Radeon HD 7790.(save the money from other parts and use it for a better GPU)
You dont need an optical drive, well unless you need it for disk and install OS...
if you can drop from those G.Skill Ares to something that's money saving, get 8GB 1600MHz for around $70
just get the i3-3220

I agree 100% with the comment above about the ram and cpu.
As for the PSU, not only you don't need 600W, even if you want a 600W bronze PSU (like you have on your list), it shouldn't cost you so much. You could get a quality 600W PSU for 70$ and even less (take a look at seasonic s12ii 620W for example and even the 520W will be enough for you).
another thing, you don't need the black version of the WD HDD. buy the blue and save yourself some money.
You can also get an optical drive for 15$ and not for 25.
With the money you save, upgrade your GPU, which is the most important thing for gaming (I'm gonna guess you build for gaming, even though you didn't say so).

alright then... consider the GPU as most important in performance for gaming...
