New Ram Issues

I added new ram to my motherboard (16gb corsair vengeance running at 1600) only to discover that my motherboard does not accept that amount or speed of ram. So, it prevented windows 7 from launching. Windows will try and launch via the initial loading screen but it will just blue screen and restart and do the same thing. Then I put back the old ram where it worked before and now it doesn't and it just does the same thing as with the new ram. I use an Amd athlon 640 am3 processor with an asus m4n68t-m le v2 motherboard. Why would this happen? I've tried everything I know including taking the ram out and putting it back, running memory diagnostic, startup repair, making sure the old ram is recognised in the bios (which it is) but still nothing.

Can anyone help me here?

With the risk of sounding like a complete novice where can I find (in the bios) the settings where I can adjust these two values? I think I may have actually done it with 1 stick of 1333 ram but now the computer doesn't seem to blue screen, it just hangs on starting windows. So I'm not sure if I've done it at all correctly.
