TBT (Tom's Brain Trust):
I'm thinking of building either an i5-based or i7-based system. I currently have a good 650W power supply.
I'm only using one graphic card (1GB EVGA NVIDIA GTX 440) and probably won't upgrade it in the near term. Don't foresee ever going to dual graphic cards. I mainly want more power for 3D renders and some computational work, and to get more RAM (my current system is limited to 8GB).
One wrinkle is that I have 4 SATA drives (two 3.0GB/sec, two 6.0GB/sec) running in a pair of RAID mirrors. I also play to set this up with 16GB of RAM which may pull a little more power. I usually have one or two USB devices attached (external hard drive, iPhone to charge/sync, etc.)
Is 650W enough or do I need more? Really hoping the answer is "enough" because new 1000W power supplies are expensive
Thanks!
