CPU temperature too hot?

Hi,
I recently decided to check what temperature my CPU was running (both idle and while gaming), so I downloaded CPUID HWMmonitor and found that it was running around 45c-50c when idle, and around 80c-85c while under stress(Far Cry 3). I was concerned when I was reading that that is a dangerous temp, so I took my CPU and heatsink out to reapply thermal paste, and found that the latches on my heatsink were broken. I ordered a new one and the temperature now is still 45c-50c while idle, but while gaming it is now running at around 65c-72c. I read on multiple forums that 80-85 is the max for most CPUs, while other forums suggest that they can run up to 90c-95c and still work fine. I'm just not sure what or who to believe... both sides seem to be certain that they're correct. I'm obsessing about this - not gonna lie. It'd just reassure me to know what the situation is, or if I should even be worried. My specs are as follows...

Windows 7
Intel Core i7 2600k
Radeon HD 6950 2GB
8 GB Kingston RAM DDR3
ASUSTek P8Z68-V
Hitachi 1TB HDD
Cooler Master Elite 430 Mid-Tower Case

I also have a fan mounted on the side of the case (for air intake), one on top and one mounted on the back (both blowing air out.) I don't think I have a problem with air circulation, but I could be wrong. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!

Solution
Hi,

I would clean out the fan an reapply thermal paste if your cpu is running on the original thermal paste. After a while it cooks and doesn't do the job as well (if its like 3 year or older )

I would try and keep it in mid 70 tops

Thank you all for your quick responses.
I have been reading up on CPU temps a lot today, and it seems most everyone is reporting their temps to be much lower than mine... mostly in the 50s while gaming. I know a lot of them say they have a water cooling system in their case, but I don't really feel comfortable installing one in mine. I personally think I have a good system of air-flow set up in my rig, but I'm still curious as to why my temperatures are so much higher than average. Can anything be done besides water cooling to lower my temperatures? Thanks again!
