Q9650 or an i series chip for very basic video editing system?

Hello everyone,

I hope that I can get some feedback.

I currently have an OLD E4400 c2d cpu in this motherboard:
GIGABYTE Intel G41 - GA-G41M-ES2L

I am doing basic 720p video editing from either my smartphone or a microsoft lifecam studio.

I am using powerdirector 11 to edit the video, and creating 10000kbps mpeg4 files with 29.97 fps for youtube.

The videos are at max 20 minutes, nothing insane.

From this guide telling me the supported CPUs:

I see the max cpu is a q9650 cpu which currently sells used for around $130 on ebay.

I can add in 4 gigs of ram for around $60 or 8 gigs for $150, and can add in a geforce 650 video card for around $150.

I have to figure out though, is it worth it to wait, save extra $ and get an i3 or i5 basic setup?

Thats the crux if this.

I could be running:

-core2 quad Q9650 ($130)
-8gb ram (800mhz, the board allows to overclock the ram) $150
-video card ($150)

TOTAL COST $430

or should i save and invest in an i5. wont play games, just want to run windows 7, and create youtube videos in 720p.

That requires a brand new setup, cpu/ram/motherboard so i wonder here.

Any of the quad cores would work fine, you don't need to go with the Q9650. If you find one that's slightly lower on the chart but significantly cheaper, go with that.

thanks for the answer. i made the mistake of posting this on yahoo answers a few days ago and forgot i am registered here lol.

Here is a question then.

1. I do not want to overclock. The board is pretty easy to overclock the cpu, id rather overclock the ram from 800 to whatever i can (1066? make sense? im not a tech guy any longer sadly)

2. so i own a microsoft lifecam studio that has the nerve to recommend a dual core 3ghz cpu. that 3ghz number is why i am looking at the q9650 but there are cheaper chips that are 2.83 or 2.5ghz.

the 2.5ghz is half the price. should i be that concerned with a 500mhz difference?

3. my main will also be to at one point boot osx on it. this board seems to work well with that. i am just lucky. i currently boot my old T7200 imac into xp for all my editing and the system chokes.

4. i dont think it would be unrealistic to be happy with this system for about a year or two until i graduate, and i could likely run adobe software too. is this unrealistic?

5. should i actually consider an AMD/ATI (i am so not tech anymore, used to be ati lol) card? I have heard they are better for video, but that intel/nvidia is better for adobe's software which i would like to get to in the next 6 months.

i just looked at the i7 950 and although the cpu can be found for $129, newegg has the motherboards at freaking $350?!

that almost looks like the winner hands down

@smorizio that looks good, but arent amd chips just not as good as intel? or have i been sold marketing there.
that would be brand new, and more available. cant boot osx but i can always turn the old box into a mac at some point in the future if i want.

many thanks again. there are many options.

between the two, which way would you go? amd or intel there.
my uneducated self would go with the 6 core amd. that about right?

What you want look at is see if your going to run a Mac software on your new pc which setup works the best. in real world this where there a real big gray issue. Amd CPU do have more cores but there a new core design in some aps there faster then intel CPU in others intel kills amd CPU. Myself I been intel CPU user for years never had issue with intel CPU and os. You will see newer i3 is a lot faster then the old 775. With newer mb and windows 8 and a Ssd boot drive lot system have 5 sec boot times. Myself I got with the cheaper i3 add four more g of ram for 24.00 and drop in a 650 video card.
