The question probably doesnt make much sense, so let me explain. I want to upgrade my motherboard and cpu, so i will have to re-install my OS, Windows 8. If i do that i will lose all my data and programs which will be a huge problem and annoyance. I already asked if i can back up my pc to a cloud or external hard drive, now i want to know if i can create an ISO image of my current PC state so i can restore from that after i re-install windows so that i will keep my programs and settings and data. Would this work? How would i do it, if it were to work.

If you know of any other way that i can acheive my goal please let me know. What i want to do is re-install windows after i install a new motherboard, and not have to re-install all my programs and redo my settings etc etc. Any help is hugely appreciated, Thanks!

Everything will be fine if you keep the same boot drive.

Is this retail or OEM license?

You will have to do a clean reinstall , because the drivers for the motherboards are different.

Well that's ok , because the license can be transferred. You will need to do a clean install because the chipset drivers and others will be different.

Backup and clean install , no way around it.

Data will be fine, programs re-install. Actually I would try just running your old OS by simply keeping the drive as is, Win 8 very good at recognising new hardware and installing drivers, worth one try, if it fails you know what you have to do...(Make sure you are connected to the 'net when you try)

Ill try my current HDD first when the time to upgrade comes. If i do make a backup, will it keep my pc settings like which default program pictures open with or the users on the pc, etc etc.?
