Hello,

Recently, i bought a new computer and i connect my external hard drive to the computer. After i done with the transferring i tried to disconnect it but it said i can't because it's still in use. so, without any hesitated i just plugged out the external hd from the computer and when connected it back to the computer it said that the external hd is corrupted and unreadable. I try to perform a check disk but it won't allow me to do that. it say, it cannot perform the disk check because it can't access the disk. please help me, i have my family and my gf pics in there. i really need it.

Solution
Try the Disk Check from the Command Prompt; In the search bar or Start\Run command, type: CMD.exe, next type: "chkdsk c: /r" (no quotes) and hit Enter.
Worked for me yesterday solving the same exact HD problem.

Chicano,
I tried with "chkdsk c: /r" without quotes but it shows failed message.
"The type of the file system is NTFS.
Unable to determine volume version and state. CHKDSK aborted.
Failed to transfer logged messages to the event log with status 50"

While I check with the "DISKPART> list volume", there are 6 volume as below;
Volume ### Ltr label1 Fs type size Status status Info
Volume 0 D Win8-16in1- UDF DVD-ROM 4485 MB Healthy
Volume 1 C RAW Partition 214 GB Healthy
Volume 2 RAW Partition 1474 MB Healthy Hidden
Volume 3 FAT32 Partition 260 MB Healthy Hidden
Volume 4 NTFS Partition 350 MB Healthy Hidden
Volume 5 Recovery NTFS Partition 21 GB Healthy Hidden
Volume 6 SONYSYS FAT32 Partition 260 MB Healthy Hidden

Could you please suggest me the best solution for this.

Thank you in advance.

I need more information like;
• Is this a USB hard drive?,
• can you post a Screenshot taken from the Disk Manager?

As it seems, Volume 1 which I suppose is the C drive or OS partition, is in RAW or unformatted and so is the second partition. So I need to know how the problem started... describe it as best as possible.

When I try this. I get this message, "The disk check could not be performed because windows can't access the disk. Please Help !

Try "CHKDSK C: /R" (no quotes) typed on a command prompt window with Administrator privileges. Start button / All Programs / Windows Accessories / Command Prompt right click and click open as Administrator.

On the command prompt window / type: "CHKDSK C: /R" (no quotes) and wait for the disk check to finish.

If you still cant run CHKDSK, reset Windows permissions to default as follows. And after that, try CHKDSK again.

Reset default permissions to repair Error code 0x80070005 also known as "ACCESS DENIED."

I tried as you suggest but then comes up with "The disk check could mot be performed because Windows can't access the disk"

You need to download and burn the Hiren's Boot CD/USB and use the included Minitool Partition Wizard... in Minitool select the HDD and next click on Partition Recovery, continue following the instructions to repair the Boot Sector which will repair the HDD's Partition Table... when it finishes the HDD should be accessible.
