i purchased a crucial M4 mSATA 256 SATAIII SSD due to my MB having a mini pcie riser built in to it. i have been using a WD caviar black 1TB HDD as my primary HD i plan on reformatting it and using is as a storage only drive. My questions is, is and mSATA SSD is slower than a traditional 2.5 SSD? i was told it was due to having to go through pci-e prior to getting to the SATA drivers. is the difference negligible my machine is primarily used for gaming and surfing the interwebz. any advice is greatly appreciated and thank you in advance for your time.

Well the only ones I have seen built onto the motherboard have been by Gigabyte and they are SATA II instead of SATA III so they would be some what slower. I do not no how much you would notice in the real world though.

Usually the mSATA SSDs tend to be more expensive compared to 2.5" SSDs. Some are also slower, but usually you won't notice.

Last January Tom's Hardware published a roundup review of 10 mSATA ssd's that is worth reading since it should answer your questions about performance. Here is the link to the article:

http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/msata-ssd-review,32...

I maintain an ssd database that is listed in a sticky at the very top of this forum section. I also maintain a smaller mSATA database. Here is the link to the mSATA database:

Scroll down to the brands and models you are interested in and follow the links to the technical reviews.

I believe the Samsung PM830 mSATA 3 6Gb/s ssd earned top honors. Unfortunately it is an OEM only version that is not available for retail purchase.
