PC cuts off randomly

A few weeks ago my PC started cutting off whenever I tried to play a game. It would take a few seconds for the power button to work, but eventually it would come back on. Now, it only stays on for about 30 seconds then cuts off, worse than before.

An IT friend of mine suggested removing the HDD and the PC seemed to power up with no problems. However, I just tried starting it up again with an external HD attached and it cut off after about 30 seconds.

Also, there's a faint sound coming from the PSU just as the pc is about to cut off. I'm guessing it's the PSU but I would love some help on this

Solution
It is probably the psu. I would suggest a good psu like a corsair, antec, etc. The cheap psu's dont put out as much as they say they do. A cheap 450w psu is not equal to a good name brand 450w psu.

I was planning to upgrade to a slightly better PC anyway as this one is going on 5 years old, so I went ahead and bought the Corsair CX Series 430W ATX 12V Bronze.

Thanks for the help guys
