Setup

Motherboard: Biostar TPower I45
CPU: Intel Core Quad Q9550 @ 2.83 GHz
OS: MS Windows 7 Home Premium
PSU: bequiet 650W
GPU: ASUS GeForce GTX 650 ti Boost

Dear all,

I have recently purchased an ASUS GeForce GTX 650 ti Boost GPU off Amazon which appears to be malfunctioning (out of the box). In particular, I have been wondering whether this is a compatibility issue or the result of a faulty GPU.
I bought this card to replace an old nvidia card which had stopped working. In the meantime I have been using a 7950 GT borrowed from a friend of mine which works smoothly.

Using the 650ti, I receive no video output to my screen and my computer does not boot as indicated by the A9 error code (which incidentally is the same code given as with my now broken old nvidia GPU).

Both of the GPU fans operate normally when the computer is switched on. One blue LED lights up on the 6-pin power input of the GPU which I have hooked up to the PSU.

I have tried already to delete GPU drivers before installing the new card with no success. I would be grateful if anyone could help me understand more about this situation.

Thank you.

Thanks for your reply :)

I will try to update the BIOS and see if that helps but I have a vague recollection that I might have already done so. My PSU must be 6/7 years old now! In any case, is there a definitive way of testing my PSU supply. In response to your suggestion about the PCI-e connectors, I have only tried one slot because I have to shift my network card to make room for the two slot GPU but I figured since my friend's card works fine in that slot this is not the problem. What do you think?

i meant the pcie 6x power connector from the psu lol not the pcie 16x slot for the card :p

it could be your psu that is failing rather than the graphics cards, your old one may be perfectly fine, especially if the psu is 6/7 years old.

try the other pcie 6x power connecter first

I believe you are right! I plugged in the new graphics card with the 2nd pci-e cable slot in the psu and the motherboard would not even light up and give me an error message. I then plugged it into the first one and the fans wouldn't even work. Do we now conclude that the psu needs to replaced?

Thanks for the help. Before I take the plunge and buy a new psu, I just wanted to put myself out of doubt and ask whether the test I did ruled out the existence of a problematic motherboard. Since I tried as you suggested the graphics card that was working is no longer able to work in either psu power slot and the temp/error indicator on the motherboard no longer lights up! Should I be alarmed or is this simply the psu dying? Also I have a fairly hefty CPU fan along with a 5 fan case...does this affect the choice of psu wattage (I was going to get the 600w anyway). Sorry if this post is naive, I really do not know much about malfunctioning hardware!!! Thanks again

Thanks, I'm just about to order a new PSU. Here's hoping it works!

Okay. My last few working boots I actually got an over clock failed message which I have now found out could be due to a dead battery. I'm going to the shops to get the battery. Lets hope it works :)

Unfortunately, the new CMOS battery did not change the situation. Should I reset the JCMOS jumper? I do not get bios error code or beeps still.

ok, remove your ram and clean it of dust if there is any on the slots and then reseat it 1 stick at a time and test if it works.

your cmos will have reset the moment you removed the battery.

did you say it will boot at random times into windows and work but not every time?

I don't get to the beep/bios stage anymore. All that happens is that everything momentarily starts up (fans, lights etc) and then switches off less than a second later (the PSU fan won't even get past one revolution!). I haven't managed to test the RAM but will do.

Edit: reseated the ram, nothing happened :(

Nope, I guess its the motherboard. Is there any way of testing further before I make another plunge? :/
