I am building a pc solely for gaming.
here are my choices-
FX 6300 6 core edition w/ HD 7850
i5 3470 (non k) w/ HD 7770 or a bit higher.
now, I have a max resolution of 1024x768, so should I get the AMD or the i5?
I live in India, so the price difference is about $150.
I am also on a tight budget.
Will the i5 be overkill?

Thanks in advance!
BTW I am a noob.

For gaming spend twice as much on the graphics card as for the cpu.
Take your combined cpu and graphics budget. spend 2/3 on the best graphics card that will buy, and the 1/3 part on the best gaming cpu.
In the us, that might mean a FX-6300 or i3-2120 and a GTX760 or 7950.
If your budget is tighter, look for a G2120 or FX4300 and a GTX650ti boost or 7850
The stronger cores of Intel are better for most current games, but if your games demand quad cores, then amd might be better.
If your cpu budget is in the 3470 price range, then intel will be better. The i5-3350P is good, and is cheaper

At that resolution, go with whatever is cheaper.

I'd recommend the i5/7770 build with the resolution you will use. at 1024x768, the 7770 will max out every game in existence and the near future. The I5 will perform better in all games that use 4 or fewer threads (currently, crysis 3 is the only game that can use more than 4 threads - the i5-3470 and the 6300 perform roughly equally in that game).

The i5 will also allow you to upgrade to a stronger video card in the future than the 6300 will (unless you buy an aftermarket cooler and heavily overclock the 6300).

1024x768 res. he doesn't need anywhere near that much card. Even the 7770 is more card than he needs, and will last him a while. CPU intensive games, such as skyrim, can still use the extra power of the i5, however.

You would be fine with a 7750, or probably even a 6670.

At that resolution, which is rather low, the HD7770 will give you all the performance you need; I'd get the stronger CPU. The i5+HD7770 will also use a lot less juice than the FX+HD7850.
If you ever upgrade your monitor, you can drop in a stronger graphics card too.
Make sure to use a high quality (not necessarily high wattage) PSU for your build. A 380W Antec Earthwatts, if available there, would be an excellent choice.
Have a look at http://www.johnnylucky.org/power-supplies/psu-recommend... which covers quite a few brands, hopefully including some that are available to you.

True enough, at a resolution of 1024x768 one does not need a great graphics card.
But, sooner or later the OP will want a decent monitor.
In the mean time, a better graphics card will permit more eye candy.
