I'm finally getting around to purchasing a new internal drive and my first choice would be the WD Caviar Black 2TB drive, though the newegg reviews have repeated mentions of DOA and short-lived drives. I would love any opinions on the risk of ordering the drive, or another, similarly specced and priced 7200 rpm 2TB drive

I'm assuming you mean the plain 'black' drive. I don't think the caviar name has been around for a while, but WD has the best warranty on their drives of any manufacturer (5 years on a black), so you'd be pretty safe. As far as 7200 rpm drives, i haven't really noticed much if any difference between models or manufacturers, i've got seagate, WD, Samsung, and others, and they're all extremely similar performance wise, i would say the WD i have a quieter than the others though.

Reviews are pretty skewed because most of the happy people who get a good drive are too happy using it to go write a review, while the angry people who get a lemon are angry and have nothing better to do than go write a flaming review; so even though a large...

the WD blacks are still using 500GB platters
the newer seagates are using 1TB platters

Unless the warranty or WD brand is a must, i'd suggest the seagate "DM" 1TB/platter models
They have higher performance and lower power usage.

Very true, didn't really consider that. I think I will go with the black because I have had a 500gb one in my rig for over a year and it's performing extremely well thus far. Thanks for the help.

EDIT: To Soul_keeper: what you said about the platter size is intriguing, however the Barracuda 2TB (it has DM in the serial number so I assume that's the drive you're talking about) seems to have an even higher DOA rate recorded in the reviews. I'll look around a bit more but it's starting to look like the WD
