Hi,

I built a budget custom pc a while ago and have ordered a new Corsair 300r case today to start upgrading it. My current hardware is:

Motherboard - Gigabyte GA-78LMT
Ram - Kingston 4GB DDR3 1333MHz HyperX Blu Red Series (4 x 2gb Sticks)
CPU - AMD Phenom II X4 965 - 3.4 Ghz AM3 Black Edition
Graphics Card - Sapphire Radeon 7770 1gb
Hard Drive - Western Digital Caviar Blue (250gb)

My main objective is to upgrade to either the new Intel I5 or I7. Which one should I buy? It will be used mainly for gaming. I also want to upgrade the ram and motherboard. What would be best for this processor?

I am going to order a new Western Digital Caviar Black 1TB hard drive later on, along with a Noctua NH - D14, ready to overclock the new CPU I want. In the meantime, would the Noctua fit in the Corsair 300r, with all four of my sticks of ram etc in there, so I can overclock my current CPU in the meantime?

I will also be getting another Sapphire Radeon 7770 1gb and hope to crossfire them, as a family member has one to sell me, as he has upgraded. Can anyone provide me a link to what I need to crossfire the two graphics cards when I get my new case, providing it can be done space wise with the Noctua in there.

Also, if the Noctua does fit in there, would there be any space for LED cooling fans? Where would people recommend putting them in the case that has the side viewing panel?

Many Thanks,

You should buy an Intel I5 Cpu 3570 or 4670
But you got a little problem, your motherboard only supports AM3+ Not Intel I3/I5/I7, I5/I7, I7/Xeon, and many more.
You need a new motherboard, you can buy one cheap for about 100$ For a good one, then you can upgrade to Intel.
Another way to go, is upgrading to a FX 8-Core Prossecor. Then you don't have to buy a new motherboard, 0+ U'll get great performace for under 180$

get the i5-3570k(1155) or i5-4670k(1150) you dont need a i7 unless you plan to do video editing, rendering etc. Sicne you are going to overclock i suggest the z77 or z87 chipset, from either asus, asrock, gigabyte. for the 1150 socket

asrock 1150 extreme 6

get 2x corsair vengeance pro 2x4 (8 gigs) @ 1600 mhz

How much is your family member selling you that GPU for?

also what is your budget for a cpu, motherboard, ram

Hi sparx89,

Thanks for the recommendations. I had the 789 motherboard in mind actually. My budget wouldn't really matter for the CPU, as I would be buying either one of the I5's wherever cheapest, but I wouldn't want to spend more than £300 for the ram and motherboard combined though.

My family member is selling me the graphics card for £30, which is barely used.

Do you have any advice on my question's about the Noctua NH-D14?

Thanks again,

so you have a clear side? um well lets see.. if you want to get more FANS in your case then this is probably what you should do, 2 fans on the side - if it fits with the GPUs there as a intake fans, and make the 2 fans on top exhaust fan and your set

Hi again sparkz89,

I just want to fill out the case with as many fans as I can, but the main thing is to have two LED fans. What I was asking is that would there be enough room for side fans when the Noctua would stick out so far?

Also, regarding the Western Digital Caviar Black 1TB hard drive, I am looking for an internal one, but am not sure which is the correct one:

If you know of anywhere that has a cheaper one please let me know.

Thanks again,

they are both internal hDD would go with the 2nd one since they have a 5 year warranty. and yes theoretically it should fit because if you line it up ( where you CPU would sit and your fans) they do not cross each other. (the fans are placed beneath ontop of the PCI slots, thats why I said make sure a fan would fit with your GPU in there.

Hi again,

Got the Corsair 300r, transferred all old parts to it, fitted Noctua NH-D14 and two new blue LED cooling fans (One at the front and one at the back), but disappointingly have had to send my brand new Western Digital Caviar Black 1TB back due to it being faulty.

Thanks for replies,
