Hi, I have a question to the community. I have an emachines et1352-53 computer, it is not a slimline and I upgraded the ram to ddr3 7 gb ram. That is the only thing I have upgraded so far, however my crappy onboard graphics are really slowing me down. I don't plan to game by any means just looking to give this pc some more power. Also I was thinking of upgrading the CPU to something a bit better. my question to you people, do you think it is worth it to invest time and money in this or just start from scratch and build a new pc? thanks and take care

Here are the full specs of the pc. et1352-53

What CPU you may be able to install is going to depend on the specific model of motherboard eMachines used. The model number should be printed on the board, itself. The system only has a 250 watt power supply, so it will only be able to power low-end graphic cards and, perhaps, some mid-range cards. I'd probably look at adding a Geforce GT630 or Radeon HD6450.

Whether or not these upgrades are worth the cost really depends on the specific model of motherboard and how much you're willing to spend. If the motherboard can accept a quad-core processor and you're willing to spend additional funds for a new power supply and mid-range graphics card, I don't see why this system wouldn't last you several more years.

Thanks for your reply. The CPU can wait, it still runs fine and does the job. I really wanted to upgrade the GPU so thanks for those 2 options, do you know by any chance if those cards are "Linux friendly"? because the stock onboard graphics were absolutely horrible with Linux.

Also can you recommend a decent power supply for a budget price. I don't I need more then 350 w right?

thanks again

Really need some sort of budget for your upgrade. The power supply is by far, the most important component in your system. In no way do you want to go cheap on that. I'm not saying you need to spend hundreds of dollars on one, but you could get a solid, brand name power supply for $40 - $50. Upgrading your power supply opens up a whole new range of graphic cards.

So what's the total budget?

For that budget, I'd probably just forgo the PSU upgrade and get a Geforce GT630 graphics card. Since you're not intending to game on this system, the discrete graphics card will give you some what of a boost in performance. From the NVidia Driver Page, it seems that linux is supported as well.

Later on down the line, if you're able to upgrade your processor, you should see even more of a performance boost.

Thanks again for your reply.

Now I noticed the 6450 was considerably cheaper, do you think it would make sense to purchase the 6450 with a psu. I'm sure it would fit into my budget. I'm just worried a cheap 250w psu will not be enough for the GT630.

thanks for your patience.
