Can a Motherboard Kill/Fry a Graphics Card?

Hello, and thanks in advance for any and all help.

So recently, I've had to RMA my graphics card for no apparent reason. XFX approved my return, so I guess they found the problem with the graphics card - Problem is, I'm paranoid, and I'm worried about how this happened, and all I can wonder is if my motherboard killed it somehow.

I have a Gigabyte GA-Z68A-D3H-B3 motherboard, and I had a XFX Radeon HD 7850 Ghost Thermal Core Edition GPU.

1. Graphics card died out of nowhere, it was working until I shut down my computer after installing a game and wouldn't work upon reboot. I got no display at all, no matter the slot/port. And the graphics card could not be detected by the motherboard, computer, etc. DxDiag was returning null upon running.
2. Graphics card would not work in friends IDENTICAL computer.
3. On board graphics card [I have an Intel 2500k] works, via the HDMI slot on the Motherboard.
4. The USBs on the front of my computer [On the case] seem to work better than those on the back of the computer [attached the motherboard.]
5. This may or may not have ANYTHING to do with this, but on the one in a million chance it does... Ever since I switched to on-board graphics, my desktop icons keep rearranging.

I'm absolutely sure this sounds crazy, but for the sake of making my mind be quiet, can someone confirm one way or another the odds of my motherboard being bad please? I have a new graphics card here soon and would hate to put it in just to watch a potentially bad motherboard fry it again.

Thanks in advance again, and sorry for the question.

Your MB cannot fry a GPU. I wouldn't worry about this. There are no obvious signs of your MB having any problems either. I wouldn't worry about it at all. The MB cannot supply enough power to fry a GPU, its not physically possible. I hope this helps!

True, but very rare.

Hmm... I'll have to research signs of a PSU going bad. Thanks everyone! Glad to know I won't have to repeat this process again... I'm going to assume it's just a bad GPU. The PSU has never given me any prior trouble before, and XFX says they don't replace GPUs that have been electrically surged or fried. But just in case, I'll look into what you said.

Thanks again!

I had no signs of a bad PSU after all. No random shut offs or trouble booting, and no popped capacitors. My new graphics card got in today, and instantly booted up for me. Thanks for helping me with my slight paranoia guys, I just happy everything worked out in the end.
