Is my GPU way out of date?

It depends on what you do with your laptop. If you play games, its woefully under powered. For surfing, simple photo editing, word processing, you will be fine with what you have.

It isn't way out of date, it's just that it's slow for modern games and upcoming AAA titles like Battlefield 4, Call of Duty: Ghosts.

Thanks for all the replies but I find this interesting because I've played AC3, Crysis 3, far cry 3, skyrim, Fallout New Vegas with perfectly fine results(not necessarily in ultra settings but medium usually). What would be a good replacement for it though for being able to play future games?

Pretty impressive about running FC3 on medium. A good replacement would be the 7970 or 7950, or wait for AMD 9xxx. Not sure about Nvidia tho.
