Hi guys I am going to build a server I need, on this server I will be doing Dlna streaming to multiple devices ftp services and backing up hard drive images using Acronis via samba before making fresh OS installations to PCs/laptops. I am between 1.Ubuntu Linux desktop
2.windows server 2012(how much it costs is not a issue)
or just install a windows OS ad use it as server. Thanks for your help just trying to get best advice I can get to build a good machine

Solution
How many computers/streams/users will be accessing the server? What is the peak usage? If you are utilizing a small network, with a limited amount of users (Windows 7 is hard coded to be less than 25 - but recommended less than 5 simultaneous users), you can utilize desktop OS software.

If you are connecting to more than 25 users and/or simultaneous use will be higher than 5 users, I would consider server software.

You can get "trial" versions of Windows Server 2008R2 and/or Windows Server 2012 for testing (6 month trial) if you want to try it out.

Ubuntu is always free.

Hi thanks for the reply I will have about 3 users simultaneous streaming Movies via DLNA and some other users using ftp and of cores the Hdd image backups. I want it to be ready for all possibilities, so is ubuntu recommended or should I go for Windows server ? Thanks for your great help

Ubuntu is going to give you less overhead - and is really good for streaming services. Windows Servers like the standard Windows Shares, and isn't as easy with streaming. There are a lot of free open source applications to assist you on the Ubuntu side as well....For that amount of people - consider Ubuntu a great choice.

I use Windows 7 as an HTPC server at home - and can stream up to 3 HD channels at once without issue (watching/recording), but since all my devices are Windows based except 1 Ubuntu machine, I went with the Windows 7 solution. I use XBox360's as the streaming device for the TV's.

As a streaming program it is not a problem I use serviio and also managed to install it on a ubuntu machine just the ftp is a little different in ubuntu, and all my other PCs/ laptops are windows 8, right now I'm thinking of going with ubuntu unless anyone advises windows server over ubuntu for a good reason.
