I recently built my desktop with a samsung 840 pro ssd and thought the 30 second startup wasn't bad since my older laptop took way longer. However I have a friend that just built a desktop with an ssd and hers starts up in under 10 seconds! is there something I'm missing here? heres my parts list:

CPU: Intel Core i7-4770K 3.5GHz Quad-Core Processor ($279.99 @ Microcenter)
CPU Cooler: Corsair H100i 77.0 CFM Liquid CPU Cooler ($94.99 @ Newegg)
Motherboard: Asus Z87-DELUXE/DUAL ATX LGA1150 Motherboard ($319.99 @ SuperBiiz)
Memory: Corsair Dominator Platinum 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR3-2400 Memory ($254.99 @ Newegg)
Storage: Samsung 840 Pro Series 256GB 2.5" Solid State Disk ($224.98 @ Outlet PC)
Storage: Western Digital WD Black 4TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive ($273.98 @ SuperBiiz)
Video Card: EVGA GeForce GTX 780 3GB Video Card ($659.99 @ Amazon)
Case: Corsair 600T Silver ATX Mid Tower Case ($139.99 @ Newegg)
Power Supply: Corsair 860W 80 PLUS Platinum Certified ATX12V / EPS12V Power Supply ($175.50 @ Newegg)

A few things to check

Enable fast boot

make sure that programs are not starting up with windows . You can use msconfig
http://www.groovypost.com/howto/windows-8-startup-programs/
Large programs like Office can slow boot times a lot

make sure the SSD is connected to a SATA port run by the Z87 chipset and not the add on Asmedia chip . That will be one of the six that are the same color

My Win8 build with a Samsung 830 boots from cold in 7-8 seconds
One advantage of windows 8 is faster boot times. Is there a difference there?
If the motherboards are different, there will be some options to speed up booting or to suppress initialization of unused adapters in the bios. you can eliminate the quick ram test.
Is it possible that the difference is sleep vs. cold boot?
If you sleep to the S3(ram) sleep state, it takes about 3 seconds to power down, and about the same to wake up.
I never have anything of importance left in ram when I sleep so a power failure would not hurt me.
You will want to deactivate hybrid sleep which will write ram contents to a hibernation file. That takes time.

Are you starting your count after bios has posted or are you including that amount of time? If it's taking 30 seconds after bios then that definitely seems longer than it should. Is your hard drive running as AHCI and not IDE in your bios settings? Make sure you hard drive is set as the first device to boot from in your boot order so that it's not attempting to boot from one of your USB devices or disk drive which might be plugged in.

I was actually thinking she might have not been coming from a cold boot state. I always power mine off and then flip the switch because I'm still having problems with AI suite turning my computer on by itself. still it seems to hang up on that bios screen a bit too long with the flashing underscore. sometimes itll flash then disappear and then flash again lower on the screen.

Ok then your hard drive is probably fine, the thing that is slowing you down is when the screen is idling at the underscore symbol correct? I would check the things I previously listed, for some reason on my latest build it would hang for an extremely long time when I had my external hard drive plugged in, I'm not sure why it did it but after it was unplugged everything was smooth sailing. I would unplug all external devices are test out to see if the issue goes away and slowly find out what's causing the problem.

Another possibility:
If the specified ram settings are not good, a motherboard will try to find a combination that works. That takes time.
Use cpu-z to verify that the ram speed and timings are the same as the ones set in the bios. If they are different, the motherboard needs to do some work to correct that every time.

30 seconds seems about 2x as long with a fresh OS install, minimal services and a SDD card. I am assuming you are counting off 30 seconds after you post and start seeing the windows loading screen? If not, your motherboard might be set to validate all the hardware before passing on to windows. In your bios there should be something called Rapid Boot. See if that's enabled. Also, it looks like you have two types of SATA ports..

6 x SATA 6Gb/s by Intel Z87
4 x SATA 6Gb/s by ASMedia ASM1061

Perhaps one is superior to the other? I mean, I know they are both SATA3 but perhaps Intel is better for SDD than ASMedia or vice versa? Might try using a different port.

Good catch Preecher.
I have found that if you do not need the extra sata ports it is best to disable them. I once had extra marvell ports, and when they were disabled, I went through bios initialization much faster. Use them only if you run out of intel sata ports.

Ok so it happened to be that I had my 4TB Hdd set as first boot priority....That seemed to stop the hangup at the bios menu. Both drives are plugged into the intel chipset because thats what I saw the most people recommend. Also I couldn't figure out how to disable the unused SATA ports.

In the bios, there should be an advanced option.
Look under onboard devices configuration.
then look for something called asmedia controller for the extra sata ports, you could disable that.
If there is a via 1394 controller, you can disable that if you don't use it either.

I'm just guessing but maybe her motherboard supports sata 3 and yours is a just sata which means you won't get the Max performance from your ssd. Also if you have a lot of programs starting When you boot you computer that can take a few extra seconds
Have a nice day :)
