Removal of a CPU cooler

What exactly is the best method for removing a CPU cooler? I have a Noctua NH-D14 (it's quite big) and I want to change my CPU. From what I understand it's good to let the computer run for a bit to soften up the paste so it's easier to remove the cooler. But after that some say you're supposed to lightly twist to get it off, but some say that's a bad idea because it will bend the pins on the processor. Also, I have a tube of Arctic Silver Matrix lying around - am I better of using that or the paste that came with the Noctua?

Solution
remove the cooler by unscrewing it

then remove the paste by isopropyl alcohol then applying a pea sized amount in the middle of the cpu

and u cant compare temps from a 95w phenom 9600 to a 125w phenom ll 965

I'm not planning to reuse the paste. I have a tube of the noctua paste. I ended up using it instead of the matrix one. Did I make the right choice?

EDIT: My CPU temps are much higher now than they were with the old processor. 32C average idle; used to be around 18C. I have a feeling it might be because I didn't put enough thermal paste. Or can it be because one of the cpu pins is soldered on (it had to be fixed after breaking off)? Or is it just because the processor is more powerful now (phenom 9600 vs phenom II X4 965)? The 965 had a 35C idle average with the crappy stock cooler.
