Are SSD drives really worth it?

From what I know, SSD's only speed up booting and loading times, but what I also know is that they're expensive as hell. I've already crossed my budget on the computer I'm building ($1500).

I'm using my computer mostly for visual effects and 3D animations.

Computer specs: GTX 770 4GB

i7 4770k (not overclocked)

32GB 1866mhz RAM

3 TB 7200mp HHD

With these powerful specs, do you think that an SSD is really needed? Give me your thoughts on this.

Dano, all you have to do is compare the Read/Write speeds to see the difference. As far as pricing...I waited until I saw one on sale. I bought a 250GB SanDisk Ultra Plus for $89. As soon as I got it home I backed up my entire drive to an external 3.0 drive, and installed the SSD...

yes because i upgraded to ssd for games and os and fixed stutter, it loaded ALOT faster bf3 maps and you will have a big boost for ssd with that kind of ram

The difference between SSD and regular HDD is quite noticeable and once you use one you'll never want to go back to just a HDD. If it's not in your budget at the time go forward with your plans as they are and get one at a later date for just you OS and install your games and other programs that take up a lot of space to you HDD. That's what I did. Now I only have two SSD's as I don't see the need to install a game until I feel committed to playing it for a while. Plus my 1Tb HDD failed. I use a 120Gb Corsair Force 3 for my OS and a 240Gb Mushkin Chronos Deluxe for all my games and it's working out quite well for me.

In that order.

First of all, if not overclocking, don't get the 4770K. They turn off the TSX and other functions. Just get the 4770.

Go with the Samsung 840 EVO SSD, it is as fast as the PRO, but quite a bit cheaper. The savings on the processor will just about cover the difference plus your $150 for the Samsung 840 EVO 250GB SSD. You may want to consider slower RAM if you must stick to your budget. I understand you need a lot of RAM, but that SSD will really speed things up. It is many times faster then a HDD. You may want to consider getting a 500GB SSD and putting your applications and designs on the SSD for some blazing speed.

I have never installed an OS that fast before. To answer your question.....YES! Even with your new fast hardware, a SSD is still worth it.
