I Can't Decide What CPU To Get

I am building a Mini ITX system and I can't decide what CPU to get. Either an Athlon II X4 750K or an i3-3240. That Athlon will be overclockable and will probably be able to beat the i3, but I will not be able to upgrade it like the i3.

What are you going to use it for? Why won't you be able to upgrade the athlon?

Its a gaming build for my cousin. He plays Minecraft, TF2, some Skyrim, and he likes streaming music. The FM2 socket is a dead end because I will have to upgrade to FM2+ to keep going with AMD.

s1155 is also EOL so i don't see your point. The Athlon has the better performance, being a quad-core.

You cant go wrong with the i3, it may only be a dual core but it should work great for what he wants to use it for. Also It offers a better upgrade option if he want to go to a 3570k or even upgrade the gpu down the road. Also keep in mind the i3 will use a lot less power.

You forgot to add ram in either of those builds. I would go with a different case that allowed you to use standard PSU and optical drive. Here would be the changes I would make to the i3 system and included ram. Do not need an aftermarket cooler for an i3. Wait till you give him your 3570k for that one.

The ram is in the custom parts its special :3. I can get an i5-4570 for $160, but I heard Haswell runs hot and I am afraid of running just the stock cooler.

You can buy FM2+ motherboards now....so I would do that and go with the 750k.

Also, whatever you do, get a quad core, i3 systems are not sufficient for newer games as he moves on to other things like BF4, etc.

If you are not overclocking, an aftermarket cooler is nice but not necessary. Even then, the cooler you chose I doubt will be much better than stock given how thin it is. Coolermaster TX3 would be the bare minimum I would go with. They do decent on an i5 chip. I used one for a 4.0ghz i5 3570k build a few months ago.

Newegg should have some from Asus already, and I believe Gigabyte has one that should be out soon, they unveiled it already. It just may not be at stores yet.
