Hey guys,

I was installing 2 fans onto the side panel window today and when I plugged them in there seemed to be a terrible whining noise coming from both fans...

I unscrewed them from the case and plugged them into the headers and the whining was gone...

The fans I am using are Corsair AF120 120mm Performance Edition fans.

I also tried 2 Corsair SP120 Quiet Edition fans which had the same effect.

If I lower the RPM the noise starts to go away but then I'm losing performance. Even on the lowest RPM setting the AF120's still have noticeable whine.

I have AF120s installed on other parts of my case and I have 2 SP120s on my H100i and I have never heard any whine from them whatsoever...

Is it something to do with the side panel window that is causing the fans to whine? Are the fans broken possibly?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for reading :)

Yeah, it must be the plastic side panel window. I have a C70 but don't have any fans there, so that is just a guess. Do they make that sound when the side panel is removed?

Yeah the whining is constant until the fans are literally unscrewed from the side panel. I have taken the panel off but it's still just as bad.

I seem to have the RPM down low enough that the whining isn't TOO noticeable.

That's a big flaw in my opinion. The fact that Corsair don't sell totally clear side panel for the C70 makes it worse. If they had known about this when the case shipped why didn't they just give you a totally clear side window.

The mind boggles.

I wonder if it is just that style of fan blade and speed? Have you tried a more conventional fan... as a test?

Unfortunately I don't have access to any other fans apart from AF/SP120 fans by corsair. Although I would imagine, considering the case is Corsair, that they would probably recommend using these ones!

I would have to buy some more fans to see if the fans are the culprit, I may invest in some as this has really grabbed my attention.

Any recommendations?

Not really. I am a quietness buff and have yet to find a fan that moves a lot of air that is quiet in that size. In fact, I moved my 2 x 120mm fans that came with the case from the drive cage to front grill back to the drive cage looking for the quietest location.
