am building a pc with my kid - we play starcraft, and no shooters... limited budget saw this on ebay
Gigabyte GA-Z68MA-D2H-B3 Rev. 1.3, LGA 1155

is it enough to build on so we won't want to replace in next 18m?
what should i pay for manufacturer refurbished?

You should be fine with that board. Just remember it's a 95w tdp item, so make sure you get a compatible sandy/ivy cpu. I personally would not buy a refurb - I prefer not to purchase another's problems. However, $40-45 would probably be in the neighborhood depending on warranty. Since you want 18 mos., I would look for at least a year warranty.

thanks man - much appreciated... i HOPE manufacturer refurb are reliable... I guess (asking here) - before adding too much shit - we put in processor and a memory stick and see if we get bios screen

IF i get it for about that kind of price what kind of processor - i3, i5, i7 - don't need overkill for just starcraft and civilization i3 fast enough for most purposes?

If you are just going to mess with it, the I3 will be fine. You cannot overclock an I3, but sometimes that's a good thing. If you plan on playing more demanding games that are cpu intensive, you might want to think about an I5. The I3 has two cores and the I5 has 4. Most games at this point are not really designed for multi-threading or using multiple cores, but you might run into a bottleneck with more intensive games.

At this point I would suggest an I3-3220 and a discrete budget graphics card such as the radeon HD-7750 GDDR5.
