So i have an old computer with an e6850 and an 8800gt. i want to upgrade but i currently dont have that much money to spend on an entire new system, since changing the cpu will also require a new motherboard and ram and so on...
Which graphics card can i get that wont be bottlenecked by this old core 2 duo, 3.0 ghz cpu? will an 650 ti boost or a 7850 be able to run at its full potential or at least close to it?
if not, will something like a 7790 be a significant improvement over the 8800gt?
thanks
also, i wasnt sure whether i should post this on the cpu forum or the gpu forum, if posted it in the wring place please let me know

Depends on the resolution....

I played BF3/Borderlands/Far Cry 3 all maxed out with the 7970. There were definitely times where the CPU was an epic bottleneck but I liked the maxed graphics more than the crap. Even lowered settings the CPU was maxed and would bottleneck in intense (64 player BF3... hoards in BL2...) scenes. The 7970 hardly ever ran very hard. :)

Any of those cards would be a significant improvement (my 8800 Ultra died in my E6600 and I got a 7970 prior to my Haswell upgrade) but even those cards would likely be bottlenecked. Get something that fits your budget and don't worry about the bottleneck. Also consider what you might possibly upgrade to in the future... IE there's no point in dropping $ on a card that's replaced in 6 months because you dumped the C2D.

it will probably be another year or so until i will build a new pc, and since these cards are reasonably cheap i thought they could be a decent temporary solution... my current pc cant run any new decent games and i feel like ive went through all the old ones
will i be able to run games like far cry 3 and crysis 3 if i get a 650 ti boost? or wil the cpu bottleneck so much i wont even be able to run them at minimum settings?
