Looking for a graphics card to tie me over for 5 months when I can buy a proper new one.

I need the best price/performance point for the day z mod, gta 5, arma 3.

I've read that the 580 and 7870 xt can trade blows with a 7970 and there is a couple of really good deals where i live.

The prices are £135, £175, or £150 respectively, I will donate to a friend of mine in a few months so not looking for lasting value just performance. I am running an fx 6300 at stock speeds atm.

Can you guys help me choose, its a disposable card, should i just go for the cheapest

I wouldn't get less than 2GB right now, and yes BF3 maxed out with 4x AA uses about 1.8GB's or so from my testing.

Mattyice SLI does not increase VRAM, the information is mirrored between the two cards, so though you may have 3GB of VRAM you can only use 1.5 of it as the information is doubled.
XFX sells a Tahiti 7870 for 155, go with that.

Tahiti 7870 kicks the crap out of the 580, think of it as a 2GB 7950 because thats pretty much what it is. Either way, to get your moneys worth you'll need to overclock your processor, a 6300 isn't ideal.

The 7870 XT and the MSI twin frozr are the same. They beat each other in areas but where they lack they make up for in another field. The evga card you are referring to is not as good as either of them. So it all comes down to do you really that 1gb more of Graphics VRam

What sort of results can I expect from the 1.5gb 580 on modern games at 1080p. will it be any good to me for day z? arma 2 is almost as old as the 580 right? Id hate to spend unnecessary cash. Is it not as good graphically or just the vram thing. I read bf3 doesn't use more than 1.5gb at 1080p even maxed out. Or is that total bs?

You should be just fine with 1.5gb VRAM and if you want in the future you could always SLI those bad boys and get 3gb VRAM
