AMD doesn't have the "hyperthreading" technology that Intel has
(where you can have a dual core CPU acting like a quad core)
So, yes it is a true 6 core CPU

It has 3 bulldozer modules which each count as 2 cores.
Basically at 'worst' it counts as 3 cores for certain kinds of operations and at best as 6 cores.
So in that sense it is not a 'true' 6 core CPU. Like the Phenom X6's were for example.
It is still a very solid and cost effective CPU.

Neither, really. It's a lot closer to a six-core than a dual-core, though - where'd you get that?

amd use cluster multithreding tecnology... fx-6300 is a real 3 core...each core have 2 cluster inside that share all information ... all bios and software read 1 cluster like 1 core.... 3 real core, 6 logical core... i7 is a real 4 core, 8 logical core with hyperthreading..... new i7 2011 socket is 6 real core, 12 logical core ..... https://imageshack.com/i/iqZHFA96j

And no, not all read it as one core. It all depends on whether the floating point unit is used.
For integer workloads it is a six core. For floating point operations, it acts as more of a three core cpu.
