Hey all,
Yesterday I built a new computer with an Asus Z87-Pro MB, i7-4770k CPU, Samsung 250GB SSD, and 1TB HDD. I installed Windows 8 (64-bit), and everything was working great. I was using integrated graphics because I was waiting for my new video card to arrive (it came today - (a budget card, MSI R7770, but I figure it's better than integrated graphics). After shutting down and installing the video card -- I made no other changes -- the system tried to boot from the HDD, not the SSD. But the HDD has no operating system installed, it's just for data storage. I went into the Bios and, for whatever reason, the boot order had changed to HDD -> DVD drive -> Nothing. SSD was listed as a drive, but not as an option for a boot drive. I used the bios to force it to boot from the SSD, and it did -- and I got back into Windows 8. However, it was running much slower, and Intel Rapid Storage Technology -- which worked fine yesterday --would not start. However, if I shut down my computer and try to start up again, it insists on trying to load the HDD. Both drives are installed on the Intel SATA controller (SSD on #1 and HDD on #2).
I went back to the integrated graphics, even though I didn't think the video card was the problem. It did not solve anything. The BIOS continues to list both the SSD and HDD, but refuses to let me select the SSD as a boot drive. I can get into Windows only by using the BIOS to override itself, and force it to boot from the SSD. In Windows Disk Management, both drives are listed, and the C: drive (SSD) is listed as "Boot, Page Bile, Crash Dump, Primary Partition". The SSD has a 350 MB System Reserved volume, which is listed as System, Active, Primary Partition. The BIOS is set to use AHCI mode, so that's not the issue.
Any thoughts?
Thanks so much.
