To be honest, even with a lot of AA you will only need 2GB - I run 2 monitors full 1080p on a single 6950 2GB, even with that I max out most games. So long story short as above, the 2GB one will be fine unless you think you'll run more monitors in the future or currently are.

Don't listen to them. If you play games you can mod (like Skyrim) the more VRAM the better!! I use pretty much all 3GB it my GTX 780 and I could be using A LOT more high res textures, but I am VRAM limited. I get slowdowns / crashes once it hits the limit, because it then loads it up in ram which pretty much pushes it over the 3.1 GB limit on that too.

Also, even BF 3 on ULTRA requires you to have a 2 GB because of the textures, and that's an old game now. Future games will push VRAM limits even higher. Get the 4 GB one now and have that head room. It's like people saying 16GB of RAM is useless.

excuse me.. ur 780 has the 384bit bus to handle 3gb vram. tomshardware clearly benchmarked & showed with a 256bit bus bandwith extra vram will be useless unless you plan to use lots of AA or crank up the settings or use a multiple display. Nuff said.

Or a single monitor greater than 1080. Yes, he may want a higher res monitor if he doesn't have one now.

Edit: On a serious note, have you considered for the price, getting a 7950? 3 GB ram and a high bus to handle it.
