Hi,
Can anyone help me please?
I've just done a clean install of Windows XP on an older machine and everything is fine except that nothing is recognised when plugged into a USB port; everything comes up as "Unknown device". I've tried mouse, keyboard, pen drive and wifi adapter (all working before and on other pc).

I've tried changing all the settings in bios, everything is up to date, I've tried unplugging all components I can, including USB headers (affects front and rear USB ports). I've noticed that the keyboard doesn't light up when plugged in, which is does in other PCs.

Can anyone suggest anything else?

The machine is a Compaq Presario SR1579ES:
Athlon 64 3700
1gb
Motherboard = MSI MS-7093 (looks like am OEM for HP so no drivers on MSI website annoyingly).
Geforce 6200
AC97
It's also got a TV card and ethernet card in.

Grateful for any suggestions!

Thanks,

Nick

PS No driver disks were provided, just a recovery partition.

Thanks, I should have said, I've already done that. It's the 2002 version of XP, updated to SP3. Windows Update is completely up to date.

Thanks

Thanks, I've tried both of those. The recovery partition stuff is sort of encrypted but I managed to extract an SM Bus driver and installed that (don't even know if that's related, but I tried it anyway to no success).

Thanks for trying. You don't happen to know what driver I should be looking for, do you?

Thanks

Cheers, really appreciate your help.

It allowed me to update the bios, so looks like it was the correct series, but unfortunately there was no change.

Can anyone suggest anything else?

Thanks,

Nick

I did, thanks, but it was quite old (the latest release that they had on the HP/Compaq website) so I updated it straight from AMD's site.

Still the same. I'm wondering if I fried the motherboard when I was messing around, as I've tried everything I can think of, and been through loads of Google searches and previous posts on here, but everyone else seems to have been able to solve the problem by uninstalling the USB bits in device manager and then rebooting.

Weird though, how the PC recognises that things are being plugged in, and there's at least enough power there to light up a USB mouse.

Thanks anyway,

Nick
