Hello people, i bought a lenovo thinkpad edge e530
(http://shop.lenovo.com/us/en/laptops/thinkpad/edge-series/e530/index.html#techspecs)
and i am trying to figure out what is the appropriate setup for hard drives.

I have a 500hdd on the sata3 slot, and one empty msata slot, which is sata2 from what they say in the specs.

So I am thinking to make the hdd external and put an 90 or 120 Gb ssd on the sata3 slot and possibly a small msata ssd in the pci-e slot for cache. But would that make any difference, since the msata slot is sata2?

Or should i put a bigger ssd in the msata(sata2) slot for my oses and give up my sata3 option for the ssd as well as forget about caching?

I intend to install ubuntu and windows 7 as operating systems. Use will be mostly entertainment and little gaming in the windows installation, and programming/web development in the ubuntu configuration.

To sum up:
a) 90/120Gb ssd in sata3, nothing in msata (sata2), the hdd made external
b) 90/120Gb ssd in sata3, small ssd in msata (sata2) for cache, the hdd made external
c) the hdd in sata3, 90/120Gb ssd in msata (sata2)
d) the hdd in sata3, small ssd in msata (sata2) for cache

So what are your thoughts on this?
Cheers

Solution
sata3 random reads & writes would be about twice as fast as the same drive on sata2. Look for benchmarks on drives with faster random reads then. I know the intel 510 is a screamer in that respects.

option b: is useless. Why cache a fast sata3 ssd with a much slower (half the speed?) sata2 ssd ???

Still a sata2 ssd is much faster than an hdd. Option C!
500gb hdd on sata3, 120gb msata (non-cache)
Boot & programs will be the ssd. use the 500gb as backups for the ssd.

thank you for your reply popatim!

in comparing (a) and (c),

do you know if there is any actual difference with regard to random 4k operations between the sata2 and sata3 bus? will a good enough ssd with sata3 be bottlenecked in the sata2 slot? i am asking about this specific, because i dont care much about copying big files as i care about the OS performance.. so in case it does i would also consider seriously the (a)

Thanks!
