I need some advice for the following problem :

I got myself this CPU and MB : AMD FX 8150 box + Asus M5A78L/USB3.
Installed the hardware in my sistem , updated BIOS and installed Windows 8.
After installation I ran Cinebench x64 , at the end of the CPU test I got a shutdown every time I tried it. Got also some shutdowns while doing random stuff on the PC.
!!note : by Shutdown I mean a sudden power off, no blue screen or anything else!!

I tested the system Watt consumption using a AC Power Meter, and got maximum to 285 W.

I installed Windows 7 Pro x64 , and ran again Cinebench and WPrime.
All tests passed with no more shutdowns.
I installed 3DMark 2011 and at the end, at the CPU test, my PC shutdown again.
I ran again 3DMark 2011 advanced just last few tests , Power meter showed a max of 350W. At the end of the test it shutdown again.
Now it is running a neverending Memtest .

On Win7 I don't have the random shutdowns i had on Win8, just the ones while stressing the system on tests. At least until now.

Could it be a PSU / CPU overheating / CPU or MB hardware issue ?
CPU running on default BIOS settings.
Any advice is highly appreciated, as I don’t know where the problem is . Thanks a lot.

My Hardware :
Case+PSU : Chieftec CX-01B-B-SL came with Chieftec 400W PSU
AMD FX 8150 running on stock cooler
Asus M5A78L/USB3
AMD Radeon 7790 1GB DDR5
12 GB DDR3 1333MHz ( 3x4GB )
2xHDD : WD Black 640GB + Seagata 250GB both SATA 2
SATA DVD-Writer
1x Scythe 120mm fan for getting the hot air out in the back of the case
1x Antec 92mm to cool the HDDs

Solution
Yea, Im 100% sure that the PSU definitely isn't helping. This is where having a low end video card or onboard video would really be helpful for troubleshooting. Like I said that is a power hungry CPU so the power requirements could be even a little higher than the recommended 500watts. But it should be no more than 600 as they usually give a solid 10% headroom adjustment when quoting it.

Well, according to your description you didn't install your drivers. Please be sure to install your drivers after you install you OS and before you connect it to the internet for the first time. Also be sure to get the 2 hotfixes for the bulldozer chip.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2645594
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2646060

And be sure to install them in that order.

I would suggest its heat related and by getting these drivers installed right and everything its a really good step in the right direction.

Hi JefferyD90 and thanks for your reply.
I had all latest Asus drivers for Win 7 installed at that time.

I also installed the KB's you mentioned in that order after I saw your post.
Is that important to install KBs and drivers before connecting to internet? Are any updates overwriting these?

Coming back from work today I got a thermal paste " Ceramique 2 by Arctic Silver " , thinking this will be better than the patch from the box cooler back. Now it will not boot in Win7 anymore, shutsdown after I login .
It works in safemode if I don't push the CPU too much.

CPU temp in BIOS HW monitor is 52 deg C .
I disabled Turbo core and Quiet FAN - > same result - shutdown

I modified the multiplier to the CPU speed is 1400MHz, thinking it will lower the temp, I got 43 deg Celsius in BIOS, but still it will shutdown after login to Windows.

CPU cooling problem it seems, but why it does not work by lowering the freq.
What am I missing ?
I read somewhere that FX Bulldozer max operating temp is around 62-65 deg is that true?

All components work fine for years on my core2duo E8400 configuration.
Memtest completed successfuly today after 3 hours.
Just the MB and CPU were replaced.
Now @1400MHz in Safe Mode at 48 deg C

Okay, first off make sure your downloading ALL the LATEST drivers from ASUS. Don't use the ones in the included CD. And sometimes if you start looking for Windows updates before Windows even knows what its looking for it will download some randy update you don't need or maybe skip over one you might need. (this is especially evident when downloading a .net update or something similar before drivers are ready)

Also, go into your BIOS and set EVERYTHING to defaults and leave it that way.

Another thing, give use the model numbers of all of your components.

Last thing, the PSU isn't powerful enough for your system. (I looked at the wrong thing originally) Go look at AMD's website for your video card. It says it (and this is a generalization) requires a 500watt PSU. Your CPU is fairly high end, so its no impossible to think that a 600watt would do you some good.

http://www.amd.com/us/products/desktop/graphics/7000/7790/Pages/radeon-7790.aspx (Check the system requirements)

If your looking for a replacement this is what I would recommend:

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=3276573&CatId=1483

It will give you plenty of headroom so you can upgrade in the future if you feel. Also it has a 3 year warranty.

I installed only the latest drivers from ASUS and BIOS rom from the beginning .

Until i fix this, I removed some of the hardware .
Current running component models are :

PSU : Chieftec Smart GPS-400AA-101A 400 W (+12V1-14A +12V2-16A)
Videocard : Gigabyte GV-R779OC-1GD
CPU : AMD FX 8150 running on the original box Cpu cooler
MB: Asus M5A78L/USB3
RAM : 12 GB DDR3 1333MHz ( 3x4GB ) Samsung PC3-10600
HDD : WD Black 640GB WD6401AALS
1x Scythe 120mm fan for getting the hot air out in the back of the case
1x Antec 92mm to cool the HDD

I set again BIOS to defaults, still geting a shutdown at Win7 login screen.
I am going to test with a friend’s 500W brand PSU this evening and I’ll come back with the results.

Installed a 550W Rasurbo PSU and tested in Prime 95 for 20 mins, 3d mark 2011, everything was fine.
I restarted Windows to complete auto-updates installation. After restart I ran prime95 again, after 1-2 mins it shutdown.
I reinstalled Win7 , disabled automatic updates and network. Ran again Prime95 for 15-20 mins, everything worked fine.
I tested again using my old Chieftec PSU, after 30 sec in Prime 95 the computer shutdown.
So it seems that is mainly the PSU to blaim, together with one or more Windows updates.

#1 Prime95 is a horrible program to test your system with. Why don't you just do real world test? Actually sit down and play a game or two and see how it does. Using a synthetic benchmark is a very Neanderthal way of handling it.

Bought a new Corsair 550W PSU, tested for 2 days in benchmark and real life software and games, and no more shutdowns .
Ordered also a ZEROtherm FZ120 CPU cooler, the AMD box cooler coupled with the summer heat and a few hours of gaming, sounds like a helicopter taking off .
Thanks for your help on this JefferyD90
