Hey everyone, I need some help, perhaps this has already been covered but I couldn't find the answer to my questions anywhere else so here I am asking for help.

Here is my system :
Motherboard : GA-990FXA-UD3
PSU : Corsair TX750W Bronze
CPU : AMD Phenom II x6 1090t
GPU1 : XFX Radeon HD6870
GPU2 : XFX Radeon HD6870
RAM : 4x 4G DDR3 RAM in Dual Channel

Here is what happens : My GPUs are overheating. When I open a game (any game no matter how bad the graphics), sometimes I will be able to play for hours before the temps start to skyrocket to over 103 celcius degrees. Sometimes I'll open the game and even in the menus, the temperature will start to go very high within 2 or 3 minutes preventing me from playing. At idle temp, my cards run at around 46 to 48 degrees. This problem started out of nowhere, my system was all working fine before (well I think so).

Here is what I have tried :
1. Tried installing latest drivers.
2. Tried formatting my PC and install latest drivers.
3. Tried removing and cleaning both cards removing ALL the dust off the fans and the heat sink.
4. Tried GPU1 in slot one alone with NO crossfire (crossfire bridge removed ofc)
5. Tried GPU2 in slot one alone with NO crossfire (crossfire brdige removed ofc)
6. Tried GPU2 in slot two alone with NO crossfire (crossfire bridge removed ofc)
7. Tried running Furmark and same thing happened.

I am currently monitoring my temperature with MSI Afterburner and CPUID hardware monitor.

Even when tried seperately, and in different slots, the cards act the SAME exact way. The temperature starts to get VERY high VERY quickly at a random time which makes me think that the problem is NOT with the GPUs (it would surprise me that BOTH GPUs are bad). Therefore, I came here for help as I don't know what to check for next. I suspected maybe it was the PSU but I really don't know what to do to indentify if that is the problem.

Could anyone please help ?

Solution
Have you checked the fans on the gpus? Blow the dust bunnies out and make sure your case airflow is unimpeded. Also check your gpu voltages with hardware monitor or similar to make sure you are not getting spiked.

Have you set up a custom fan profile with afterburner? Typically, the stock fan curves won't go above 50% and that gives you excess heat.

I forgot to mention but I already tried everything suggested above. I tried editing the curve, and cleaning the fans. Altough, I don't know how to monitor if the correct power is coming in from the PSU. Could someone please help me with that ? I tried finding more information on this and I couldn't, maybe I'm not looking at the right place, if so could someone point me in the right direction, thanks!

Well well, I just found out what my problem is. I was monitoring the fan speed in game and it would indicate that the fan speed was at 100% or 80% for instance so I thought the fan was working well. I just looked at my fan on my GPU physically and found out that the fan is intermittent. Apparently, it is a common issue with these cards. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m2-lrHv2juY. (XFX 6870). Both my cards have the same problem. I contacted XFX and they sent me replacement Fans free of charge and I will just have to change them myself and it should fix the issue, well for now at least. I tried asking the customer service rep if the new fans were going to be more reliable and he wouldn't answer the question directly, but answered something around the lines of "No, it will be the same quality but you still need those fans don't you" so in the meantime I will be looking for an alternative for next time this happens and I will keep monitoring the temps closely. Thanks everyone for the replies/help.
