Switching Win7 version without loosing data

So I was temporarily using Win7 Ultimate that was a not so registered version for several months and have a lot of programs on the HD. I just recently got a Win 7 pro installation disk and Key. Is there any good way to re-install/switch to the Win7 pro without formatting or deleting the programs and data I already have on my drive?

Unfortunately there is no way to downgrade the Windows version. Only upgrades.

Backup your data and program data needed (Bookmarks, game settings, program settings, etc...)

You must perform a fresh install with Win 7 Pro.

I followed the directions and performed an "upgrade" When I try to enter the Key it tells me that this key is not not the correct key for this version of Windows 7. But this is a win 7 pro key. Are there any issues with upgrades reading the key wrong vs a clean install?
