amd or intel for gaming computer

Solution

Intel is know for a better single core performance, so it's mostly a better choice for gaming. AMD is know for extreme multitasking without breaking a sweat, AMD FX-8350 has almost the same performance as Intel Core i5-3570k + it's better for multitasking + it's cheaper so AMD FX-8350 is a better choice, but that was just an example of a comparison, it depends what's your budget, how much are you willing to spend on a CPU?

Is the whole system $1100? If yes, what's your budget for your CPU?

What flight simulator software do you use and do you know of any benchmarking sites that use it to show differences between processors? In certain games the AMD architecture falls really short of where Intel is, and on certain games it competes quite well . . . so depending on the game it may not make sense to even think about AMD or it might make sense to design the whole machine around one.

From some quick goggling it looks liek FSX is pretty terrible at multi-core usage as it has one main game and then spreads some of the asset management work on the other cores. I'm not sure if that info is up to date, but that probably points to using an overclocked 3570k or 4670k as the CPU over a 8350. I haven't been able to find any benchmarks that aren't a few architectures old.
