Processor upgrade possibility to Studio XPS 435T

Hello,

I currently am using a Dell Studio XPS 435T, with a i7 CPU 920@2.67 GHz. I have upgraded the memory and the graphics card already. The last thing to do is the processor.

I am wanting to change out the processor instead of buying a new computer. I am interested in the new i7 4770R @3.9 GHz.

Is this possible without replacing the motherboard, or extensive other problems.

I am not real sure actually. I would imagine 800+. I recently replaced my graphics card to the Radeon HD 7800 series, and it recommended over 800 watts to perform correctly.

Is there a sure-fire way to check?

You only need 400-500W for the 78xx series. The PSU itself should have it on it. If you didn't buy it yourself for an upgrade I highly recommend a new one. OEM ones are terrible quality and should be replaced asap. Especially for upgrades. I'd get this before you proceed any further: http://pcpartpicker.com/part/corsair-power-supply-cx600
As for MB/CPU, the i7 is good for people doing encoding and all that multithreaded stuff. If you do that I would recommend it (or the FX 8350 if you want to spend less). If you dont, go with the i5-4670 and save yourself some money!

It needs to be replaced. The corsair I linked is a great deal.

Good choice! As for CPU/MB I have a few questions: do you plan on OCing, do you plan on CF in the future? Do you have brand preference on CPU? What do you use your PC for? And finally, what do you plan on spending? Thanks :)

I don't have extensive knowlegde about OC'ing, so I would say no due to me not knowing how to do it. Brand really doesn't matter, however I am a quality freak, and money isn't really that big of a deal for the most part. I would rather pay more for the best I guess you could say. I like easy and quality haha! I was considering buying a whole new computer, but felt like it was a waste when parts could be upgraded.

Okay! And is the PC gaming only? Or will you be doing other stuff on it?

Gaming, I run a retail business from it as well. It is always doing something, but not video editing much.

Yeah, but do you absolutely need to have the best parts? For your needs an i5 will be just fine. The i5-4670 will be perfect for your needs and you will notice no difference in going with an i7. If you were encoding or video editing or the likes then its different. I just don't think it will help at all getting the i7. In a new gaming build I'd only recommend an i7 in a build over $2000 simply because at that point GPU is maxed. Get the i5, a MB and another GPU and it will probably only cost you a little bit more then getting the i7.

I upgraded my 435MT i7-920 system with a new 620 watt PSU and a GTX 780 graphics card. I also upgraded the heatsink cooler on the Northbridge chip because it was running too hot, which appears to be typical of these systems. I couldn't be happier with the results. My 435MT now runs the latest games on max settings just like my brother's new gaming system. Sure I don't have the fancy processor, or memory, but I have the same graphics card that he does and that's apparently 95% of all that matters. Buttery smooth graphics! This is by far the best upgrade I have ever made to a computer system and I have been building systems since the 80's. I also planned to upgrade my 6 gbs of memory to 12 or 24, but I see no use. Games don't seem to use much more than 5. And I researched a faster processor as well. It appears the i7-975 extreme is the fastest the 435MT will take. But I decided to hold off on that also for a few reasons. First, my CPU usage rarely goes over 80% even during gaming. Also, the i7-975 is only about 25% faster than the i7-920. And finally, prices are still coming down on them. $300 for a used one on ebay is not really worth the 25% speed increase right now when I don't really need it. I've also read that we can run 1333 memory with a i7-965 or i7-975 in this machine. But again, when I'm already getting max performance out of games, why bother with any more upgrades? My main problem now is that it takes an hour+ to install games because the hard drive is an old spindle drive. My next upgrade will be an SSD and there will truly be no noticeable difference between my 435MT and a modern gaming system. :) Here's a link to my upgrades:
