So ive had my 6950 for maybe about 3 years, and recently ( past few months) when playing games my screen would flicker black for a second or two, then go back to normal, but today it flickered black and stayed like that for longer maybe 5 seconds. Could it be its dying? Overheating? (idle at desktop it sits at about 63 Celsius, or is it another part of my system that is going bad? This would only happen when im playing games. it would not shut down my computer. I know its somewhat a bit old most likely will replace and buy some 7000 series in the next 2 days

Specs:
Z68 extreme4 gen 3
i5 2500k
16gb ddr3 ram
124g ssd
ocz mod x stream pro 700watt psu
HIS 6950 2g

Thanks!

Solution
I've been having the same problem for weeks. Went threw all the possibilities, from new graphics card, new modem, virus scans even called my net service provider asking them if there was any problems with my connection. Still not found the exact cause. But found a solution so far. I downloaded a program called Razor Game Booster. It lets you choose all unnecessary programs and shut them down for gaming. After shutting everything I didn't need listed, the flickering during gameplay was gone away. Now it is a matter of going threw each program by starting it up and seeing when the flickering comes back.

idk could be, but my guess its my card thats dying, as a few of my online buddies and dad has said, loading into games is fine its just when im playing say civ 5 some days it would flicker but some days it would not, nothing freezes closes, crashes, my monitor just goes black for a few seconds not every day and every hour but here and there.

I ordered a new card a msi 7950 twin frozr that was on sale on newegg and going to pick it up soon hopefully its the card that is dying haha....

If nothing crashes, no errors, no artifacts..

could be your monitor itself over heating or dusty..a GPU will usually give you much clearer signs of fault then just flickering black every now and then..if it was hardware i think you would be getting freezes along with it..if the monitor is going bad there is nothing to indicate it from the tower itself..which is honestly what your problem sounds like as I had a monitor go out in a similar fashion..only after flickering black my colors would be crazy

hmm that could be it too, its not the best monitor one of those samsung sync masters you would buy from costco, So even if my screen flickers black only during when im playing and not when lets say browsing the internet. would the monitor still be the problem?

Hopefully when my card is ready to pick up maybe tommorow, and it still happens i will scratch out the gpu as the problem, and most likely is my monitor and buy a new one

Well I am not saying thats what it is but it does sound like it from my past experience with a monitor dieing..

Does it only happen in certain games or is it across the board (i.e games with graphics that aren't demanding)

Usually when its hardware related you'll get stuttering/freezes/massive loss of FPS/buzzing noises/high temps etc..flickering out every now and then sounds more like the screen to me.

It happens to games across the board civ 5, league, and final fantasy ( only games ive been playing ), i get it the worse during civ 5 but thats expected due to the high load of that game. Since i use dual monitors also ill switch main screen to see if anything acts up as well.
