Recover Files from Old Hard Drive

My old laptop died. RIP. I pulled the hard drive and bought the cable to connect it to my new laptop. However I the file structure that existed is not showing.
I cannot find my family photos etc..
I can access the drive and can see system files but not any of my personal files.

Windows 7 on the old and windows 8 on the new.

Please help!!

Try loading the computer off a linux cd. Linux usually allows for better compatibility with viewing partially corrupted hard drives. Load up gparted from the Linux cd and attempt to repair the hard drive and/or recover some of the data.

I thought once you connected the HD you could access all the data. It's like windows is hiding all the non-system data. I don't get it. Does the data recovery software solve this?
