Installing RAM Help

I have an MSI 970a-G43 motherboard, with DIMM1 and DIMM3 filled with 2 4GB 1600 mHz. I want to add a Corsair XMS3 (1 stick with 8GB of RAM) and a Crucial 4GB. I don't know how to pair them, or how Dual Channel works because I tried putting the XMS3 into DIMM2, and the Crucial into DIMM4, but it said that 8GB of RAM was installed, and I eventually hit a BSOD.

I then tried this:
Move the original sticks from DIMM1/DIMM3 to DIMM2/4, then put the XMS3 into DIMM1, and the Crucial in DIMM3... That didn't work and my system didn't POST, until replacing it originally.

I pulled the XMS3 and the Crucial from the same PC, so they should work together. I really want to add 12GB of RAM to my PC so I can run a server.

Thanks in advance!

Solution
8GB stick in slot 1, and the 4GB sticks in 3-4, raise DRAM voltage + 0.05, make that 0.07 since it's an MSI mobo and set CPU/NB voltage to 1.22 and try that

I have a question though... would this work?

DIMM1/3: The original 4GB Sticks

DIMM2 or 4: Corsair XMS3 (If DIMM2, DIMM4 is empty and vice versa)

What should my voltages be then?
