I'm getting a new video card to celebrate the 1 year anniversary of my homebuilt PC and I'm stuck questioning myself
Should I get a Radeon 7870 or go 7970?
I most likely will be OCing this card and I don't plan on buying another video card for a long time after this
The answer is easy, if you can afford 7970 then go for it.
Yeah but I'd heard that the 7800s had a rendering problem or something along the line of that
Well, out of the two you mentioned the 7950 is the way to go. Specially a boost edition with 3gb Vram. Its a nice card, and will give you some longevity, depending on what games your playing, and also what your other system specs are. The 7870 isn't a bad card at all, specially the XT version, which is basically a cut down version of a 7950, and nearly as good.
There isn't a rendering problem as such with AMD cards. They do have a driver/frame latency issue, which I believe has been addressed by AMD latest beta driver. Saying that, that issue for the most part isn't even noticeable to our eyes, it's just that playing games can feel less smooth on AMD hardware because of it.
So, out of the two you mentioned, the 7950 Boost. As other poster has said, a 7970 is going to be faster, so if money is no object then go for it. Personally, I like Nvidia cards. For me better features, better drivers, better SLI performance. A card that would fit well in with the two you've mentioned would be a GTX760 and is Toms own recommendation in the price/performance bracket your looking at.
