My current pc is looking a bit out-dated now and instead of messing about upgrading individual components im just going to build new from scratch, mostly because i enjoy it.

current system:
Fx6300 @ 4.2ghz
4gb corsair vengance ram
500gb baraccuda HDD
Asus gt440 GDDR5
Gigabyte 78lmt-s2p
Cit 500w psu (crap, i know).

Looking to build a new system, preferably intel if the budget allows, and was looking for suggestions for mobo/cpu pairings. Realistically an i5 system but if an i7 can be used it will be great as later in the year i am likely to be doing 3D design work and the multithreading is likely to be beneficial

Overclocking: yes
Uses: gaming/multimedia
Budget: around £400-£500
Storage: need lots of it, store a lot of videos on the pc so need 1-2TB.
SSD not neccessary nor desired.
I have a hyper 212 evo as a cpu cooler and lots of spare case fans.

Thanks a lot

you have solid processor for gaming and multimedia ...
you can get huge performance boost in games by replacing your graphics...
get gtx760 , replace your psu for something like seasonic G 550w ,
for storage get WD caviar blue or seagate barracuda 7200 drive and your upgrade is done...

sorry i didn´t notice you will be doing that kind of work later on , in that case i7 makes sence
but your budget is to low to replace mobo + cpu + graphics and buy some harddrives at the same time...

Well i could salvage one of the 500GB hard drives from my existing pc to conserve some of the budget. Should have mentioned i dont need an OS, monitor, keyboard, mouse or accessories, simply the tower. I could always use the ram out of my existing pc as well. Is it not possible to get an i7, mid range mobo and say a radeon 7770 for £500? I dont play 2013 games, they're games such as test drive unlimited 2, fsx etc. Just want to future proof a bit more than a GT440. I definately need a PSU, it is not modular, has no pci-e power connectors and isnt 80+ certified. Its probably putting my whole pc at risk at the moment.

I do have an i7 in my laptop, an i7-3520m 3rd gen with 6gb ram an HD4000 graphics. Do you think this would be okay with 3D design and rendering? That way i could go for an i5 for the gaming and multimedia pc and save that money for a better gpu
