I have a WD 500g hd with a system partition and another for programs and data. I keep getting errors that prompt me to defrag. I would like to reformat and reload but I don't know what else I will have to do so the system will recognize and work with the rest of the programs. I hope I am making sense.

Solution
reinstalling windows will necessitate reinstalling all your programs.
Why not defrag your harddrive as windows is asking?

Do you have a recent backup? If not make one and then defrag the drive.

Other options would be to format the drive and restore the backup. A file backup, as opposed to sector backup, will restore your install in a defragged state. A sector backup will restore windows exactly as it was before so thats not going to help.

Failing that you could do an XP repair. Pay heed to the warnings.

Hi all thanks for the help and information. When ever I would try to defrag after about 80% in it would stop counting and the drive activity indicator would come on steady and even if I let it go over night it would never complete. but after doing some research I found out that I needed to run chkdsk, which came up with pages and pages of errors on just the one "system partition, then I ran it again with a /f and prayed that I wasn't screwing anything up. after that the system actually booted and ran, then I did the defrag and it worked .Voila it worked. Things run a lot better now. Thanks.
But if Idid have to reload XP on partition C: would I have to reload all my programs on I: ?

If your OS is on a separate partition from the programs, you may get away with not having to do that. But the Registry may be screwed up and not be able to locate certain files if they are not installed fresh so the OS can locate them.
