Hello,

I currently have an AMD FX 8320 chip sitting in the board right now awaiting the arrival of my new heatsink, the Phanteks PH-TC12DX.

The reason I went with this cooler is because my nh-d14 from Amazon was horrendously incomplete, and I had to send that back. Also, when I was using the chip with a spare hyper TX3 at a tiny "overclock" to about 3.8 and an undervolt to like 1.22ish, my power supply emitted a high pitched scream that drove my dog nuts and shut off my system as I was rebooting after tinkering in the BIOS to try to get some better performance. (usual messing around/testing higher clocks)

The thing that made me mad was that it was an ANTEC PSU! I know they can't all be gems, but that's kind of annoying to me :( At least it didn't kill anything :D

I'm getting off topic here, but long story short, I had to purchase a new PSU and heatsink with a similar budget of just the Noctua cooler. I decided on the Phanteks heatsink and a Corsair CX600 PSU. Both of those set me back about $105.

What I want to know is how well that heatsink will overclock with that CPU?

My case is fairly open and has decent air circulation. It's a Cooler Master Elite 430 that I've managed to de-clutter and cable manage quite well, at least with my old PSU and even with the lack of cable management in that case.

I am hoping for something around 4.5 Ghz. The reason that I think that is pretty reasonable is because that chip was able to handle some pretty low voltages I believe. (correct me if I'm wrong) My processor batch was 1244, if anyone knows much about that batch I tried looking around and didn't find anything conclusive as to whether that was a particularly good batch. I understand that every chip is different, but let's assume I have an 'average' processor in this case :) I haven't seen much about others using this setup, so I figured that the best way to find out was to ask myself!

I ordered the PSU and heatsink last night but Fedex says that it's going to come all the way to my door by tomorrow from 1000 miles away or so. I used Amazon prime's free 2 day option. Let's hope I get it then! I don't think Fedex delivers on Saturday IIRC.

My other specs (custom built):
Elite 430 Case mentioned above
M5A97 EVO Motherboard - the one with the better 6+2 phase VRMs. Handled an FX 4100 at 5 Ghz no sweat for me.
8 GB Vengeance RAM with heatsinks off due to clearance issues.
2 HDDs
XFX 7850 Ultra OC Edtion Running at around 1100 Mhz Core
Note- I understand that the GPU may be a bottleneck in games that I play. I'm looking to overclock to increase performance down the road so I won't have to upgrade quite as soon and to make AMD's crappy single-threaded performance not suck as much. Also, overclocking is like a hobby to me

Corsair CX600 PSU arriving with my Heatsink (same online order as it)
4 case fans- Cooler Master Blue LED Fans
Some old Lite-on slop for the optical drive.

Thanks! If I'm missing any info you guys need let me know! I typed this up kind of fast and tried to be complete.

Me too. It just showed up in the mail. Amazon pulled off overnight shipping with their Prime 2 day option :D

Let's see what this thing can do! :bounce:

EDIT: Got it to 4.5 Ghz on 1.31 volts! I'm a happy camper as it never saw anything more than 42* C after back to back cinebench runs.

Although, the only thing my old PSU did kill was the onboard sound. Now all I hear is a faint, high pitched whine through my speakers and headphones. Off to Best Buy for a $20 sound card! lol
